There are many reasons why dogs become itchy, like skin allergies, parasites or just blowing out their old coat. Home remedies for itchy dogs may help with cases that are mild or infrequent or simply provide some relief from severe itching until you can get your dog in to see the vet.

If your dog scratches too hard, she may break her skin which could put her at risk of infection. You may not be able to prevent her from scratching, but if you can relieve her itch, you’ll be helping her physically and making her feel more comfortable. There are plenty of dog safe ingredients you can probably find around your home that can provide your scratching dog some relief.

Apple Cider Vinegar

When mixed in a solution of 50% water, apple cider vinegar can be effective at relieving your dog's itch. Before you try this solution, make sure that there are no open wounds on your dog's skin and that the skin is not raw otherwise, the acid in the vinegar may cause pain. You can soak your dog's paws in the solution if they are irritated, or you can put the mixture in a spray bottle and spray it on the itchy spots.

Baking Soda

Baking soda can reduce inflammation and redness of the skin as well as reduce itching. Make a paste you can spread on your dog's skin by mixing the baking soda with an equal measure of water.

Chamomile and Green Tea

Green tea and chamomile are excellent home remedies for itchy dogs because they are known to have anti-inflammatory properties. You can use them as a spot treatment for your skin by steeping a tea bag and applying it to the affected area once it cools. You can also give your dog a chamomile or green tea soak by steeping tea bags in a sink or bathtub full of lukewarm water for up to five minutes, then letting him soak for at least that long.

How Proper Diet Helps

While parasites and illnesses are common causes of canine itchiness, some cases result from allergies to ingredients in your dog's food or treats. Many types of dog food contain gluten or wheat, to which many dogs are sensitive, and though dogs are largely carnivorous, they can be allergic to the beef, chicken, or turkey that many types of foods are made from.

Among other health benefits, omega-3 fatty acids help soothe the itch and heal the skin. You can give your dog food containing omega-rich ingredients, such as sweet potatoes or fatty fish, or you can add omega-3s as a dietary supplement/.

When To See a Vet Rather Than Using Home Remedies for Itchy Dogs

If your dog is showing behavioral changes — such as constant scratching, excessive licking, depressed mood, or loss of appetite — you should take her to the vet as quickly as possible. While there, ask your vet about whether a supplement formulated especially for your dog's skin/products/soothe would be beneficial.
